That's because most methods teach you to build a plot and bolt a character onto it. That's backwards. The character has to come first. Not their backstory. Not their arc. What they're avoiding.

The story arrives. The small life can't hold. Your character is forced to confront the thing they've spent their whole life avoiding.
Then the story either heals them or destroys them.
